I tried my first yoga class when I was in college; my aunt had dragged me to the class and demanded that it would be good for me because I "needed to chill out" as she would often say. She, like all of my family, knew I was constantly bouncing all over the place, and overly stressed about EVERY-LITTLE-THING (yes, I am a recovering perfectionist!) Even in my first class, I loved that deep sense of connection that I didn't get from other workouts.
I took classes sporadically after that, but my desire to share yoga developed much later and was fueled by my own journey for empowerment and self-care. My love of yoga deepened after I returned to Washington, D.C. from a stressful job as special education teacher in one of the most under-resourced schools in South Louisiana. Determined to coach my students to success, I began to burn out—it was on the mat that I realized I didn't have to lose myself to give to others. All my life, I had been searching for meaning, balance, and struggled with living up others expectations versus MY own.
Yoga helped me find the balance I needed both on and off the mat to restore myself and give more to my students. In the classroom, I slowly began incorporating breathing techniques into my classroom to help my students manage their stress and behavior.
Yoga is a way for me to release stress, find stillness, explore what it means to walk a different path; and more importantly, live my own dreams and embrace My Path to Be happy, healthy and free. I was amazed by the power of this practice and how it shifted behaviors both in my students and in myself and I knew I wanted to do more with it.
I completed my 200 hour certification in Vinyasa/Power Yoga in Washington DC in 2012 under Angela Meyer, and completed my 500 hour certification through YogaWorks Charm City in Baltimore under Kim Manfredi in 2017. In 2018, I completed my 85hr Prenatal Training under Lily Dwyer Begg. I have also earned certificates in Yin Yoga and in Yoga Philosophy for Kids K-12 through YoKid, a nonprofit committed to bringing yoga to under-served kids & teenagers in the DMV. I am most energized by empowering others to reach their full potential and sees yoga as powerful vehicle to help people find balance, come “back home” and share their best selves. I consider my style energetic, friendly, and focused on proper alignment with a strong attention to linking movement with breath. In my classes, you can expect to feel safe and cared for, yet very challenged. You’ll break a good sweat, but will first and foremost, be encouraged to move at your own pace.
As my mother would always say, "your health is your wealth!" Come practice with me and get started on your own journey. Learn more here.
